Don't judge us for eating what's already inside a pregnant fish. Eating fish embryo is no different than eating fish eggs that you eat at a sushi/Japanese restaurant or maybe caviar, except that it looks different (more like an embryo) and tastes different.
I typically have a lot of fish in my diet. It is rich in omega-3's. However, I have not prepared fish myself-- my mom goes all out gutting out the fish and removing the scales. Yes, we do have whole fish; I personally buy ready-to-cook fillets and so I don't come across fish eggs inside fish. The butter fish shown in this picture often times comes from the store pregnant during certain seasons so there would be an embryo laying in there that my mom leaves in there for us to eat. Surprisingly, as bizarre and nasty as it may look to you, it actually tastes really good. It tastes sweet with a hint of fish like it's rich in nutrients, is soft but maybe firmer the meat, and I am it's edible glad because considering that there's probably hundreds of potential fish babies in there, we wouldn't want to let any part of a fish go to waste. We generally eat everything from the fish except the bones, fins, scale, face, tail, etc. We use chopsticks to precisely pick out the meat and fine bones if any of them get stuck in the meat. It does take some skill and a lot of patience but in the end it is worth it for some of us. I'm not sure how people eat boned fish with a fork, but I don't recommend it unless you can accurately remove the bone. One time I had a bone stuck in my throat and I had to remove it myself with a tweezer. It was pretty painful and not fun. Anyways, if you eat butter fish, the embryo is safe to eat. There are other fish that come pregnant but sometimes those tastes like something rotted, so be careful. I'm not sure why other fish have foul tasting fish eggs, but I wouldn't risk it. The fish eggs served fresh at the sushi places, "roe" is also safe to eat. What about you? Have you eaten any fish eggs? What kind? Any "embryos"?
