When I was young, it confused me to hear things like "I want to eat Chinese." because I never said "I want to eat Americans." It got even stranger hearing people say "I smell Chinese" and it made me wonder if I smelled like "Asian."

Don't get me wrong, I am an American and I do understand now what people mean.  Fast forward to a few years ago, I came across a few bottles of flavored sauces, some of them being the typical herb flavors and one of them was labeled flavored "Asian."  I couldn't help but crack up, which caused a stranger to look at me in shock like I was insane. The "Asian" blend was soy sauce, ginger, etc.  I haven't tried it but the ingredients sounds like something we would put in an Asian dish for meat or rice, but not necessarily the main ingredients to all Asian dishes.  I also wouldn't want to consume a lot due to high salt content of soy sauces.

What I am still confused about today is the popularity of labeling something "Asian" as soon as mandarin touches a salad for example, "Asian salad."  I've never had any mandarin oranges in actual Asian dishes and not sure if there are mandarin oranges in traditional Asian cooking, or it just doesn't seem common.
