Bizarre Foods Experiments

From left to right, cow liver, pat thai, coconut mango sweet rice, and juicy eel.  My friend, a fanatic of Bizarre Foods, I think on the Food Network channel, wanted a day of culinary experimentation with really bizarre foods. About 3 years ago, he purchased cow liver, eel, while I decided to make pat thai, coconut mango sweet rice, since it is different food, Asian instead of American.  The ingredients for the former, could be found in American stores and the later, in Asian stores.

I never cooked eel before, nor eaten it like that, (only in sushi), but based on eating a lot of fish myself, my friend wanted my opinion, so I decided to help cook it, seasoning it with pepper, and if I recall, soy sauce.  Coconut mango sweet rice, I've cooked before, (recipe also available at link), and managed to somehow make it look nasty again.  It was my first time cooking Pat Thai.  I picked up Thai peanut sauce, banh pho noodles (or rice noodles, typically used in pho).  Boiled the noodles in water as direction states, and then sauteed with generous peanut sauce, seasoned with pepper if desired.  I didn't know how to make it without it coming out dry, but it did come out a little dry.  I think I needed more peanut sauce, to cook it covered to keep moisture in, and maybe to cook it just enough for the sauce to be warm, (so less would be evaporated); maybe add some water.

As for the cow liver, my friend tried all sorts of seasonings like garlic, pepper, salt and ketchup.  It was mostly after he first tried a bite when he realized it tasted like a bad kick in the mouth, and desperately tried masking the strong odorous cow liver flavor with all sorts of seasonings.  Nothing worked.  If I recall correctly, after taking some time to tried to persuade me, he convinced me to try a tiny piece of it, and no offense to the cow's liver, I felt as my tongue was completely violated.   I think either I really didn't have a taste for cow liver, or that there needs to be a pro chef who knows how to handle cooking it.

Pat Thai and coconut mango sweet rice tasted good; my friend and his bros liked them.  The eel was juicy but the taste was too strong for me.  I think it may have needed to be washed more and scalled out or something or just simply cooked by someone who knows how.

Anyways, I don't recommend trying to cook cow liver and eel, unless you know what you're doing or the strong tastes.  As for the Pat Thai, and coconut mango sweet rice, you can just follow my recipes and modify it as you wish.  Enjoy!
