![]() II didn't have a good camera on me, so the pic doesn't look so good. Friend of mine visited from Hawaii, so we decided to get together at a Spanish restaurant that happened to sell "Warm Octopus Salad."
Now I've had Octopus before and I've had Squid, (aka "calimari," which, by the way, I think is also used as a nicer, less scary way of saying "squid"). I've also had tasty Laotian and Thai squid salad, cold, with basil, veggies, cucumbers, lime, fish sauce, herbs, and such. I've had grilled octopus once prior to attending this restaurant. But I've never had anything called "Warm Octopus Salad." The term frightened me yet intrigued me so I knew I had to try it. Octopus itself tastes almost exactly like squid, except it is bigger, firmer, squishier and chewier. When I ate octopus, it was like eating seafood bubble gum, except squishier and sometimes really hard to rip apart with my teeth. When I ordered "Warm Octopus Salad" it came with some potatoes, basil, herbs and seasoned with some sort of unique spicy sauce. For some reason the tentacles with the suction cups on it looked like it was staring at me like a set of eyes (also scary), kind of like one of those horror films where a giant octopus comes out, puts you in a choke hold and slowly engulfs you. But I finally took a bite and it was very unusual tasting, that I couldn't tell if I liked it or not. It had a musty, distinct and grainy feel to it (from the sauce and spices), but it wasn't bad. I knew I liked octopus, and the potatoes tasted good.. I think I was just a little too scared which it took away from the experience. Either way, though somewhat expensive for a small proportion, I think it was worth trying at least once.
