Annie
By Markus Pope
written on: 2009

when i was a young man, i would stay up late
searching for words that were surely second rate
attempting a writ of wit and whim
way into the night til the world grew dim

i would dream of beauty, a breathtaking muse
i would melt into my tunes and contemplate a ruse
imagine myself in love with someone beautiful like you
someone redeeming and thoughtful to light my soul anew

i must say as i sit here late into tonight
searching yet again for wit, whim, maybe some insight
i never dreamed i would actually live long enough to find
the angel that once lived only in my mind
