Impact of Racism

Thank you to the movies "To Kill a Mocking Bird" and "A Time to Kill"

The issue of prejudice and/or racism not only affected my life but my family's life. I think these issues relate a little to the movies, "To Kill a Mocking Bird," and "A Time to Kill." I have experienced prejudice and racism throughout my life and my sister has too. Prejudice and racism affected our lives.

The most recent situation that happened was this year. In the summer I was using AOL Messenger, and I decided to search for "buddies" to tell them about my web site. I introduced myself by typing "Hola!" to a stranger -- so he thought I was black. He then called me the 'n' word and when he found out that I was Asian, he called me an "Asian piece of sh*t," and repeatedly typed swears at me until I blocked him. I was completely furious that he was a proud racist! I also have experienced racism throughout my life, mostly when I was in elementary school and middle school. I would suffer endless teasing of people squinting their eyes with their hands and making noises to mock the Asian languages. Not only have I experienced that, but my sister has too, except worse at her high school, before I went there. Her high school horrors were that she was almost the only Asian person at her school. Some Caucasians would take her things and throw them across the hallway and some would holler at her. They had hatred towards her for no reason, but for what she is and what she is proud of -- her ethnic background.

These situations partially relate to the movies. For example, these situations deal with racism, hatred and cruelty as in the movies. Also, both movies had people of different race who were treated with no respect or equality as in these situations my sister and I experienced. As "minorities", we were treated different, making us feel really hurt, but there is at least one person that is on our side, just like in the movies. So the situations of racism towards my sister and me is partially like racism in the movies.

The issue of racism affected my life by making me change the way I think and be aware that racism is all around. If these situations ever approach me again, I am not going to let it be my problem and suffer the pain again. I am going to let it be their problem. They are just going to have to accept that there are a lot of diversity around this worlds and they have to learn that race does not matter. Hopefully someday we will be in peace.

The issue of prejudice and racism not only affected my life but my family's life also. These issues partially relate to the movies, "To Kill a Mocking Bird," and "A Time to Kill." I have experienced prejudice and racism throughout my life and my sister has too and it affected our lives.
